State-of-the-art Cargo Processing at New Amerijet Miami Facility
Amerijet International Airlines at Miami International Airport (MIA) is bringing added convenience to international air cargo shippers. Amerijet serves 49 destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America with scheduled frequency. In addition to the company’s cargo capacity on its B767-300 freighter aircraft, Amerijet provides cargo services to 475 destinations worldwide utilizing longstanding agreements with its interline partners.
Since moving into the 360,000 square-foot (33,500 sq. meter) import/export facility last August, Amerijet has greatly enhanced its freight handling processes by adding automation for scalable warehouse management and accuracy for both inbound (import) and outbound (export) air freight.
“Our new facility brings our customers greater efficiencies and speed. Supported by our air freight processing technologies, we’ve eliminated many manual processes to reduce handling and processing time with our advanced material handling equipment, which includes an extensive cargo roller system and an automated pallet building area,” said Alfonso Aleman, Senior Director of the MIA Hub and Domestic Operations at Amerijet.
The Amerijet warehouse is the first facility in the U.S. to have the European-made cargo roller system. “We’re able to process inbound trucks at the dock immediately to move freight into the warehouse for staging for upcoming flights, or to load directly onto the airside ramp for waiting flight departures,” Aleman said. The new facility features nearly 70 dock doors and three ramps, and more than one-half of the dock doors are dedicated to the receiving of export freight.
Export processing takes on new efficiencies
Amerijet receives great volumes of export freight which is trucked into MIA daily from major U.S. markets, such as Houston, within 24 hours; and just over two days from Los Angeles—all on dedicated truck service. “Our infrastructure, including our many dock doors, give us the ability to expedite offloading of exports and keep wait times for truckers to a bare minimum,” Aleman said. When freight arrives, drivers are assigned a dock door, and the appropriate paperwork and labeling is generated.
From large multinational freight forwarders to smaller shipping agents and direct shippers that span from large organizations and SMBs to single consumers, the new Amerijet facility accommodates all shapes and sizes of freight. Popular commodities include general cargo, electronics and other high-value shipments, perishables, hazardous materials, human remains, AOG (aircraft on ground), pharmaceuticals, live animals and oversized freight, also called project cargo.
Perishables are key imports
Perishable shipments are some of the primary imports to the U.S from Latin countries. Amerijet’s facility includes a 35,000 square-foot (3,250 sq. meter) perishable handling center providing refrigerated, frozen and chilled storage. Climate-controlled receiving areas and computer-monitored storage chambers ensure the cold chain integrity of perishable shipments during the transportation process.
Examples of perishables include year-round shipments of pharmaceuticals and biologics from Puerto Rico; seafood from the Honduras or islands in the Caribbean; and fresh flowers from Colombia. Other perishable imports are more seasonal in nature such as berries in spring from Mexico.
Amerijet offers high-priority handling and expedited ramp transfers at its hub in Miami and its expedited services include Express Shipping (GCX) for time-definite service, and Rush Expedited/Drop Ship (RXS) which allows receipt of freight up to two hours prior to a flight departure among other customized services for shippers from many different industries.
The Amerijet customer portal, MyCargo, allows shippers to manage their account and shipments. MyCargo users can book, pay and track their freight using a customized and secure web-based platform.
