Honoring the Life and Legacy of Amerijet Founder, David Bassett
It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Amerijet’s founder, David Bassett, passed away Thursday March 12, 2026, surrounded by his wife Kandee, three daughters and close friends.
David Bassett founded Amerijet in 1974 with a single leased aircraft transporting small cargo and passengers between the United States and The Bahamas. What began as a modest operation quickly grew. By 1978, Amerijet had expanded its operations to include overnight courier routes operating a fleet of Falcon 20 aircraft. In 1987, Amerijet International established its hub at Miami International Airport, laying the foundation for the global cargo airline we know today.
More than five decades later, Amerijet has grown into one of the leading cargo carriers serving Latin America and the Caribbean, an achievement rooted in David’s vision and entrepreneurial spirit.
Throughout his career, David was widely recognized for his contributions to the aviation industry. In 2007, he was the recipient of the Juan Trippe Award, honoring individuals who had made significant contributions to the development of international aviation. In 2013, he was honored with prestigious Wright Brothers Memorial Award, which recognizes a lifetime of contributions to commercial aviation safety.
David was also deeply committed to the South Florida aviation community and giving back. Under his leadership, Amerijet supported numerous organizations and initiatives, including the Greater Miami Aviation Association (GMAA), ISTAT, community relief programs and humanitarian efforts through the region.
Please join us in remembering and celebrating David’s life and the lasting impact he had on Amerijet and the aviation industry. Details regarding memorial services will be shared as they become available. In the meantime, we ask that you respect the privacy of the Bassett family during this difficult time.
